Important Things to Consider

  1. Protect yourself from mosquito breeding
    • Make sure there are no openings
    • Use a breathable material that is small enough to prevent insects from getting in and laying eggs, but large enough to allow air to escape and water to go in at a faster rate of flow.
  2. Build to handle volumes of water
    • Filtering at rain source.
      • Cover trough to prevent leaves from filling up and causing backup of water and not draining properly.
      • Or Mesh wire filter to prevent leaves from going down your spout and plugging up system.
    • Filtering at opening of your rain barrel.
      • If you choose this method, it will be the least costly and work similar to your present draining.
      • By discharging your spout into the top of a barrel that has a larger opening of at least 3-4 inches, using a cheese cloth type sock or wrapping.
        • You should never have a barrel that is completely open on top.
        • This would be a danger trap for any small children.
